For 70 years, the Fahrney Keedy Auxiliary Organization has been an integral part of our organization, enriching the lives of residents and strengthening the community through volunteerism and fundraising. Now, as the organization enters a new era of revitalization, we’re inviting folks who have a passion for volunteerism to be part of this enduring tradition of service and support.
A History of Dedication and Impact
Established in 1955, the Auxiliary was created to work alongside Fahrney Keedy’s Board of Trustees and Administration to enhance the overall experience for residents. From its earliest days, the Auxiliary’s mission has been to generate financial support, foster spiritual and moral encouragement, and provide hands-on volunteer assistance.
“Year after year, this organization continued to give back to our residents,” says June Elsner, current President of the Auxiliary Organization.
Over the decades, the Auxiliary has spearheaded numerous projects, including the funding of a P.A. system, kitchen furnishings, a beauty parlor, a library, and even a dedicated chapel. The organization has also provided shade canopies for outdoor seating, upgraded sound systems, and donated funds for special events and activities.
“The auxiliary paid to remodel the auditorium which continues to enhance the lives of our seniors,” said Kathy Neville, Director of Independent Living.
Supporting Our Staff and Strengthening Community
Beyond its contributions to the physical spaces at Fahrney Keedy, the Auxiliary has played a pivotal role in supporting staff and encouraging education through its Scholarship Fund.
“Auxiliary has provided scholarships for employees – some who are still working here. Enhancing their education and benefitting their individual roles,” exclaimed Judith Moran, Independent Living resident.
A Spirit of Volunteerism and Togetherness
The Auxiliary fosters a culture of giving and belonging, offering a variety of ways for members to contribute. One of the most beloved fundraising traditions has been the bake sales, where employees and Auxiliary members come together to provide homemade treats in the spirit of camaraderie and support.
Volunteering with the Auxiliary is more than just service—it’s about investing in a place so many call home and ensuring a bright future.
“I live here. I love to belong to things I’m associated with. It helps my overall life, considering that the improvements we may foster will help me. I may not need them right now, but I might someday. I think it’s very important to be part of where you live,” says Auxiliary member and Independent Living resident Judith Moran.
Especially as a 501(c)(3) organization, Fahrney Keedy relies heavily on the contributions of its volunteers. Whether through fundraising efforts or hands-on support, every act of service strengthens the mission.
The impact of the Auxiliary is evident in the many improvements made to Fahrney Keedy over the decades. In addition to the chapel, one of the most significant contributions, the Auxiliary funded the purchase of a bus for residents’ transportation needs, allowing them greater mobility and access to community activities. Other major projects included the furnishing of kitchen and dining areas, as well as the establishment of a fully equipped beauty parlor and library, both of which continue to serve residents today.
Additionally, over the years, the Auxiliary has provided essential contributions that have enhanced the lives of residents and staff alike. Contributions have included funding for a new phone system after a lightning strike, enhancing the chapel’s sound system, and supporting walking trail expansions to encourage outdoor activities for residents. The Auxiliary has also funded much-needed equipment, such as wheelchairs, diagnostic probes, and an electric lift for nursing staff, as well as comfort items like furniture and craft supplies. These efforts, made possible through dedicated volunteer work and fundraising, underscore the long-lasting impact of the Auxiliary’s commitment to service.
“In order to be part of the Auxiliary, we ask that you become a member. You can attend, support, volunteer—we have a lot more things planned in the future! Helping with appreciation breakfasts, yard sales, car shows, our annual Apple Fest, larger fundraisers—there are many things that you can do,” says Leslie Hart, Auxiliary member, Independent Living Resident, and Chair of Fahrney Keedy’s Board of Directors.
“Whatever your skill set is, as a volunteer, we can find something for you to do that will fit what you want to give back,” continued Hart.
Looking Ahead: Honoring the Past, Building the Future
The Auxiliary’s commitment to Fahrney Keedy remains steadfast, with exciting plans ahead, including the return of beloved traditions and new initiatives.
“I’m excited for luminaries. It’s our hope to bring that back,” says Hart.
Plans are also in motion to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Auxiliary, celebrating its deep roots while forging a path forward.
“Fahrney Keedy is going to be here well into the future, and the Auxiliary needs to grow along with it. We want it to grow and serve the needs as they come up,” said Elsner.
The resilience of the Auxiliary mirrors that of the community it serves.
“The pandemic has ended, and we don’t think the Auxiliary needs to end either. You have to pick up from the ashes and just keep going,” said Moran.
“When you think of so many people that have come before us that have spent so much time and gave so many volunteer hours, and it benefitted so many people, and then suddenly, there’s nothing. That’s just not acceptable,” emphasized Elsner.
